The New York Daily News is the largest and most widely read newspaper in the New York metropolitan market and is the fourth most-widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States with a daily circulation of over 600,000.

The Daily News was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson. He launched the Daily News on June 26, 1919. Since its founding, the paper has won ten Pulitzer Prizes.

Data from Scarborough Research compiled in March 2011 ranked the Daily News number one in the United States in combined readership - print and online - for their local market, with a reach of over 4.5 million people.

According to the September 2011 Audit Bureau of Circulations report, the Daily News climbed to the nation's fourth-most circulated newspaper, up from the number six spot, surpassing the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post. When combined with online editions, the Daily News ranks as the nation's third largest newspaper, according to the report.
